A pillar drill is made up of a base, pillar (or column), a table and a drill head. The pillar drill, also known as a Pedestal Drill or Drill Press, holds a drill bit in place using a Jaw chuck or tapered spindle. There are two main types of chuck, the first is tightened with a chuck key, the latter is hand tightened. When using the first, it is vital that the key is removed before turning on the machine as it could be thrown from the machine and cause injury. In our workshop we exclusively use hand tightened chucks.
The HSS (High Speed Steel) twist drill is the most common drill and can be used for wood, metal and plastic materials. HSS is used for machine tools because they run at far greater speeds than hand tools. Twist drills have two rotating cutting edges that act in the same way as a saw tooth or chisel blade. Drill bits between 1-12mm they have a straight shank that is held in place by a chuck. Larger drills have a tapered shank that fits, or locates, into the spindle of the drilling machine.
