Drill Speed

The pillar drill is powered by an electric motor which turns a drive shaft, turning a stepped pulley. The driver pulley turns a driven pulley, attached to the spindle. The stepped Pulleys work the same way as the gears on a bike. If you use a large drive pulley and small driven pulley, this results in a fast output. If you use a small drive pulley and a large driven pulley, the output is slow.
The drive belt is altered by hand while the power to the machine is off. A lever on the right of the machine allows the drive belt to be tightened as required. As a rule, the harder the material, the faster the speed required. The size of the drill bit also affects the required speed. The smaller the drill bit, the higher the speed.

In our workshop there is an individual pillar drill for metal work. Do not attempt to alter the speed yourself. If you need to alter the drill speed, ask a workshop technician.
